Locally Made Jeans

Indie denim designers Sara Van Aken and Sebastian McCall have local jean junkies clamoring for more.

December 22, 2010

There’s nothing better than sliding into a perfectly cut pair of jeans that hug and relax in all the right places. However, pursuit of said perfect jeans can be long, tiring and, sometimes, bleak. When we heard about two new denim designers based right here in our own backyard, we had to investigate.

Sa Va designer Sarah Van Aken crafts her Honest Denim jeans ($179) using in-house production and ethically sourced materials. All of the cotton she uses is milled and grown in the US before being dyed and washed in Philadelphia with low-impact dyes and enzymes.

“It was really difficult to find a denim brand that was sustainable and matched our price point,” Aken says. “It got to a point where we were so fed up with what was available that we were like, ‘We can just do this ourselves.’”

Also on the local jean scene, is Sebastian McCall’s eponymous denim line (from $165) sold at his specialty boutique, Charlie’s Jeans. Each pair is manufactured in America and made with 80 percent American and 20 percent Italian fabric.

“The response to these jeans has been amazing,” says Meredith Albert, general manager of Charlie’s Jeans in Old City. “It’s all about fit. The waistband never gaps and the fabric holds its shape well, so you don’t have to wash them every time you wear them.” Charlie’s Jeans, 233-237 Market St., 215-627-3390; 1735 Chestnut St., 215-564-2495

Lash Factory

MAC goes to great lengths for its latest lash innovation.

October 11, 2010

Customizing your mascara is easy with MAC’s new Haute & Naughty Lash. The secret behind this two-in- one wonder is in the wand’s ability to measure out more or less mascara using a new dual-wiper system. The result is two drastically different looks: The pink cap creates long, defined lashes, while the glitterflecked purple cap adds unmistakable volume. The superhydrating formula means that mascara stays flake-free no matter which look you’re wearing. 1427 Walnut St.
