“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”
—Winston Churchill
Volunteerism has been a big part of my life since high school; I’ve
taught children’s art classes at community centers, walked dogs at animal
shelters and picked up trash on beaches and at local parks. Over the years
my service may have helped others in small measure, but the act of giving
has enriched my own life in dramatic ways. I’ve met and forged friendships
with extraordinary people and shared memorable times while giving back.
(Who knows? Maybe I’ve even improved my karma.)
Charity can bring purpose and meaning to our existence. That’s
what John Legend, our cover star, believes. The Penn grad and singersongwriter
sat down with me to talk about, among other things, his goal
to be “impactful as a human being” in the global community. Read more
about Legend’s Show Me campaign and his efforts to help those living in
extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. The story begins on page 92.
This month’s edition of Philadelphia Style is labeled the Luxury Issue.
It’s filled with the season’s latest and greatest products and experiences,
from one-of-a-kind coats to once-in-a-lifetime excursions. Flip through the
issue to glimpse outstanding fashions, just-released gadgets and fantastic
splurges. I’m sure they’ll get you thinking about holiday gifts for loved ones
(and perhaps yourself).
But while you’re perusing the pages, don’t forget about what it is that
defines true wealth: the ability—or really, the privilege—to raise up the less
fortunate. Please volunteer your time. By doing so you’ll get in touch with
your community. And believe me, that can make all the difference.
Until next time,
