For those of us who grew up in Philadelphia, Atlantic City was always a top summer destination, with its boardwalk attractions, top-tier headliners, and sandy beaches. As we matured, heading down the shore became a year-round affair; we indulged in world-class restaurants and partied at one of the biggest nightlife scenes on the East Coast. And in 2003, Atlantic City further legitimized itself with the opening of Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which attracted tons of new visitors with its splashy new casino floor, luxury rooms, and destination dining spots.
Now, in 2012, another revival is underway with the economystimulating investments of Revel Entertainment and the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. These game-changing developments are greatly supported by local government officials, including Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo T. Langford and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. The newest organization at the forefront of promotion is the Atlantic City Alliance, the new nonprofit that is funded and operated by local casinos under the guidance of president and CEO Liza Cartmell. Its mission is to increase tourism by highlighting the glowing attributes of this unparalleled resort town. In this issue, we explore the future of the Alliance and talk with the many noteworthy people that make AC tick.
And we cannot ignore the newest casino installation in our own backyard: the Valley Forge Casino Resort, which opened in March to much fanfare. With all of these new resorts, it is no surprise that this summer will be one of Philadelphia’s best yet. For that reason, I am especially excited to present our annual Atlantic City Confidential issue, to help you navigate the best the city has to offer, both the well established and the new. I guarantee you will enjoy exploring the city as much as we have in creating this issue.
