Japanese lifestyle store Rikumo brings home goods with Far East flair to Center City.
When online shopping for far-flung finds doesn’t cut it, there are a handful of shops in Philadelphia that offer a truly tactile experience—but none do so with as much style as Rikumo, a lifestyle boutique stocked with of-the-moment Japanese brands. “You can immediately tell this is something different,” says manager Magali Roman. First opened in the Loft District in 2009 by husband-and-wife team Yuka and Kaz Morihata, Rikumo moved to this larger Center City location in early 2016. The chic boutique’s minimalist aesthetic offers as much design inspiration as the carefully displayed goods themselves. Many of the most popular items are everyday essentials: Binchotan charcoal toothbrushes and face masks; Hinoki Himalayan bath salts; Banko Yaki ceramic table settings; and don’t forget about the towels, a worthy addition to any linen closet (the Yoshii towel—chambray on one side, terrycloth on the other—is one of Rikumo’s best finds). After shopping, have a seat at the community dining table for complimentary Japanese tea. "Japan is a very modern culture, yet has a rich history of craftsmanship and a certain way of doing things," says Roman. "but [those aspects] can still exist in the present for a lifestyle that's very functional." 1216 Walnut St., 215-609-4972
