The Academy of Music’s 163rd Anniversary Concert and Ball takes place Jan. 25

With four new movies and a commanding performance in the HBO miniseries Catherine the Great, Dame Helen Mirren had a very good year in 2019—and it started right here in Philadelphia when the award-winning actress hosted the Academy of Music’s 162nd Anniversary Concert and Ball. While actor and author John Lithow was just announced as this year’s headliner, the Philadelphia Orchestra is also making noise with its latest move: The orchestra returns to the historic venue for its first subscription concerts since relocating to Verizon Hall in 2001. Prior to that, the orchestra had been performing at the Academy for over a century. The white-tie gala is the ultimate occasion to see Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin lead the ensemble in an intimate performance to raise funds to preserve the nation’s oldest opera house. Now, isn’t that music to your ears. Tickets from $350, box seats $1,950, 240 S. Broad St., academyofmusic.org
