Bastia brings a splash of Mediterranean sun to Philly’s culinary scene. Dine alfresco in Anna & Bel’s quaint courtyard.
After a summer filled with preview pop-up dinners at local culinary haunts such as Fiore, Laurel and a.kitchen, Tyler Akin’s much-anticipated Bastia has finally opened its doors on the ground floor of the equally anticipated and newly opened 50-room Anna & Bel boutique hotel, where Bastia calls home in the heart of Fishtown.
The fare at Bastia is an homage to all things Mediterranean.
Akin’s no stranger to Philadelphia’s dynamic food scene. The celebrated chef and restaurateur has made significant contributions to the culinary landscape through his previous work at Stock and Res Ipsa and his current work at the Hotel duPont’s French brasserie Le Cavalier, and the anticipation surrounding Bastia has been building all year. The chill hotel café-by-day, sophisticated restaurant-by-night even garnered early attention from Bon Appétit, which included it in their prestigious list of eight “must-visit” restaurants in the United States for 2024.
The hotel’s common area was designed to create an urban oasis.
The Mediterranean menu, noted for mainly featuring seafood and vegetablecentered dishes, reflects sun-drenched influences from Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily and even touches of Croatia—with a modern twist, as Chef Akin crafts seasonally driven menus that blend these traditional flavors with local Mid-Atlantic ingredients. Casual lunch offerings include lush sandwiches on freshly baked focaccia, while the inventive dinner menu includes dishes like skate cheeks with corn and bonito beurre blanc, a sea urchin butter tartine with stuffed squash blossom and amberjack crudo with whipped cannellini, finger lime and clementine. And the wine and cocktail program at Bastia is designed to complement the food, featuring a carefully curated selection of low-intervention Mediterranean coastal wines, as well as a variety of spritzes and aperitifs, perfect for sipping at an al fresco table as the afternoon fades into evening.
