Looking to try a new restaurant, but you're not sure which one to pick? Listen to one of these 12 Philadelphians—they're dishing on their favorite takeout spots.
Violeta Yas, Chief Meteorologist, Telemundo 62
"I use a local meal delivery service, Performance Meal Prep, 3-4 days a week to prevent my diet from getting too out of control. The rest of the week it's takeout/delivery city! I LOVE the chorizo tacos from El Purepecha. It's authentic Mexican, and they just opened a very cute indoor space. Can't have the tacos without an orange Jarritos."
Malik Jones, Trainer & Co-Founder, Triyo Fitness
“Currently, my favorite restaurant for takeout is Veda at 19th and Chestnut! I'm a big fan of their vegetarian options, specifically the veggie biryani. I'll usually add chickpeas to that, and then get their garlic naan on the side.”
Jordyn Amoroso, Chief Brand Officer, Clove
“During quarantine we have developed our own at-home traditions and one of them is Kalaya take-out date night. Although we cannot travel right now, Chef Nok Sunteranon's Thai dishes really transport us. Without fail, we always order mara pad kai, shaw muang, coconut rice and then we mix up our entree dish because she's always innovating her menu!”
Elizabeth Wellington, Lifestyle and Culture Columnist, Philadelphia Inquirer
“Something about being stuck at home makes me want to curl up on my couch with a glass of red wine and a big fat, Italian hoagie. When that mood strikes, I put a call into PrimoHoagie, the South Jersey-based cold cut experts. The bread is that lovely combo of crusty gooeyness. And when I say extra cheese, the folks at the Roxborough location know what I'm talking about. We all know a hoagie isn't complete without chips and the PrimoHoagie chips are yum, yum salty goodness.”
Chef Jose Garces
“The place I've been loving for takeout lately is Pizza Jawn on Main Street in Manayunk. It's one of my new favorite takeout spots. You have to order your pies in advance, which adds a level of fun to the experience. Most importantly, their dough and their crumb (underlying dough structure) are just absolutely amazing. Salut and cheers to Chef David Lee.”
Justin Pizzi, Vice President of Strategic Implementation, Visit Philly
“My go-to takeout spots are Double Knot, Bud & Marilyn's, Talula‘s Daily, and HipCityVeg. Lots of options, always taste great and packaged well.”
Dr. Nazanin Saedi, Dermatologist, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital
“My favorite regular takeout has been from Han Dynasty in Manayunk. I do miss going to the one in University City regularly but getting the dry pots for takeout are just as delicious and spicy. Another favorite is El Poquito in Chestnut Hill. I love their guacamole and fajitas.”
Brian Anderson, Principal and Creative, The Perception theperception.com
“Cheu Fishtown has always been a staple in our office since before the pandemic hit. In my opinion, it’s just the ultimate comfort food and it’s always consistently good...especially on cold winter days! It’s basically the cure for anything. If you’re taking out for the first time go for the brisket ramen, for sure. And I also love the spicy chicken momo dumplings and Brussel sprouts. For pizza, Pizzeria Beddia is the spot. Get any pie. Literally, any pie will do. Plus they’ve got takeout wine, cocktails and soft serve. What more could you need all in one place?
Aimee Olexy, Chef & Owner, Talula’s Table, Talula’s Daily and The Love
“What a tough question! Philadelphians are so lucky. The choices are endless. As a devoted locavore—and not to be preachy—I shop at two fantastic Philly farmers’ markets for my 'takeout.' The Rittenhouse Market on Saturday and The Headhouse Market on Sunday are robust with pure, natural takeout year-round! There's quiche, fish, cheese, ready-to-go meals and more. Then, when I am not cooking, I love the fresh mushroom and papaya salads from Kalaya, and as a die-hard cheese lover, the Sunday Snack Box and the cheese fries from Pizza Plus are another favorite.”
Alexander Hankin, Vice President, Hankin Management Company
“I probably order sushi two or three times a week—it’s my version of comfort food. I alternate between three restaurants: Vic’s (the tuna dumplings are yum), Fat Salmon (the best spicy tuna crispy rice) and Zama (for the wasabi tuna roll). However, when I really want to treat myself and feel a little fancy, I order in from Barclay Prime. Hands down, my favorite restaurant in the city. The world is a lot better with fresh popovers and a petite filet.”
Brian Kappra, President & Creative Director, Evantine Design
“My favorite go-to for takeout is Dim Sum & Noodle in Fairmount, near my house. Love their vegetable dumplings, shrimp dumplings, all of their soups and grilled short ribs in black pepper sauce”
Morgan Bedore, Vice President of Sales and Creative Development, Constellation Culinary Group
“With so much togetherness at home and time in the kitchen a vacation from cooking has been a fun distraction for the Bedore family. Some of our faves are Tiffin, burgers and bar food from Brick & Brew, breakfast from Kettle or Sabrina’s, and sushi from Kuma or Bluefin.”
