Not only is Marla Beck the co-founder of Bluemercury—the country’s largest and fastest-growing retail chain of luxury beauty and spa products—but she’s also a seasoned authority in both the makeup and skincare industries. With two locations in the Philadelphia area (plus two out in the suburbs), it’s never been easier for local ladies and gents to get their fix of Bobbi Brown, Laura Mercier, Fresh, La Mer, and all of the other luxe brands that Bluemercury carries.
Philadelphia Style sat down with Beck to talk about her beauty routine, favorite products, and the trends we should look out for in 2014.
How has your beauty routine changed over the years? MARLA BECK: In skincare, I like more power, fewer steps. Like most busy moms and professional women, I just don’t have much time in the morning or evening. At night, I like to use my own treatments—an M-61 Power Glow Peel and M-61 Vitablast C Serum. During the morning, I hydrate pre-makeup with a moisturizer. When it comes to makeup, I love things I can use with my fingertips, like the Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour and NARS’ The Multiple.
How do you keep your skin soft and hydrated during the chilly winter months? MB: I am all about having thick, heavy face creams and face oils in my tool kit. Darphin’s Organic Chamomile Aromatic oil goes skiing with me and La Mer’s Moisturizing Cream is always in my cabinet.
What beauty trends are on your radar for 2014? MB: Makeup for spring starts off soft and ethereal: pastels for the eyes and subtle bronze for the cheeks. Lips start the season with a soft violet or ballerina pink shimmer. Tons of coral, tangerine, and raspberry will be seen later in the season as well as every possible version of blue you can think of. For eyeliners, we are seeing full cat eyeliner in a dark color.
What are three products that everyone should have in their beauty arsenal this year? MB: First, pore perfectors—they’re very hot. They are like a gel coating in a tube or stick that basically fills in pores before makeup application. Kiehls and NARS each have brand new ones coming out. Also, you’ll want a peptide-based product to use as a primer. There’s one kind of peptide that firms the skin and another kind of peptide that relaxes wrinkles, so find one with both types, and a gorgeous cheek bronzer—Laura Mercier’s Liquid Radiance Bronzer or Bobbi Brown’s new powder bronzers are to die for.
Do you have any tips for refreshing your makeup bag for the New Year? MB: Make sure you have an at-home glycolic peel—they are miracle workers. Also, find a new firming/contouring serum to use pre-makeup and move to a cream eyeshadow in a stick or pot—they last all day.
