What is something you constantly strive for?

Growth! I believe we should never stop learning and seeking ways to grow and evolve. I started in the beauty industry in 1996, working full-time in the field while attending cosmetology school 6 days a week. I also graduated from the Westmore Academy of the Cosmetic Arts in Los Angeles a few years later. Each and every year I attend different hands-on education workshops to hone my skills, be inspired, learn new or different techniques and approaches to makeup. Since 2020, there are also now more virtual forms of education available. This is a great option for things that can taught without the hands-on in-person experience. Always be open to change or new ideas and never stop learning!

Do you do anything that is signature to your brand?

One signature to my brand is customization. I create a customized look for each person I work with. By asking in-depth questions and learning more about each person’s personal style, their preferences, wedding day style and more, I create a look that helps makes them feel like an elevated version of themselves. I also offer customized wedding day service packages.

The other signature to my brand is the JKo Beauty Experience. I believe the experience should go beyond beautiful makeup for the day. To me, it’s also about how people feel from the beginning and throughout the time leading up to the wedding day. It’s about answering questions thoughtfully, being responsive, professional, communicative, always prepared, flexible, helpful and so much more.

What is the most gratifying part of your business?

I specialize in bridal makeup artistry and customized makeup lessons. I find them both to be incredibly gratifying. When working with my brides, we typically begin working together 12-18 months in advance. By the time the big day arrives, I feel like a friend is getting married and I am beyond happy and excited for them. When her makeup is complete and I hand her the mirror, oh the joy it brings to my heart! I know how significant your wedding day is and I am always honored to be a small part of it. The most gratifying part of makeup lessons is knowing the confidence it builds. I absolutely love receiving messages about how much more confident they are in doing their own makeup as well as with shopping. People book lessons for so many different reasons, from pre-teens learning the basics to brides doing their own makeup for a destination or elopement wedding. I love it all!

What big news do you want to share?

I am currently in the process of expanding my cosmetic collection! My journey began by creating a lip collection. My mission was to offer a convenient option for touchups throughout the wedding day, event or as a new favorite for every day. A new lipstick is always fun! It is imperative to me to only offer cruelty-free products that are made with integrity. All of my products are made with high-quality ingredients and are professional-grade.

How far in advance should couples book your business?

I only book one wedding per day and every couple works with me, personally. Most of my couples book me 12-18 months in advance. I always recommend booking as soon as you have officially set your date since so many dates are very popular. Each year I end up booking a few last minute weddings though too. Things have a way of coming together!
