MANE EVENT
Hair loss is a common concern for many men as they age. According to Dr. Jason Bloom of Bryn Mawr’s Bloom Facial Plastic Surgery (bloomfacialplastics.com), 65% of men will suffer from visible hair loss by age 60. Luckily, advancements in the field of hair restoration means there have never been more options, both surgical and non-surgical, for gentlemen.
Dr. Bloom recommends that clients begin the restoration process in the area that’s most visible to other people, typically the hairline.
“It does depend on the hair loss overall but, generally, we start with the hairline or the crown of the head and then patients come back a few years later to address other areas,” he says. Bloom’s practice is home to two popular services. NeoGraft is a state-of-the-art solution for hair transplantation that promises more natural results with less recovery time and no linear scarring—two common complaints associated with hair transplantation.
“Previously, patients had to deal with a big incision and a big recovery from taking a strip of hair out from the back of the head, where hair growth is typically more active as men age,” he says, noting that the process is still a time commitment, taking six to eight hours. “The treatment has been refined down to just transplanting individual follicular units one at a time instead of punches of hair. The cool thing with NeoGraft is that we aren’t just transplanting the follicle but the message so that hair grows like follicles in the back, not the front.”
Bloom Facial Plastic Surgery is now home to a cuttingedge hair restoration techniques.
The other, less invasive option is PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) which use the patient’s own platelets to stimulate cell renewal and increase blood flow to the hair follicles. Bloom’s earth-friendly, ingredientrich hair care line, Hairapy, can enhance treatment results—100% of participants in a clinical study had improved hair volume and density.
Bloom’s practice is also the first East Coast location to offer Acorn Biolabs’ gamechanging new treatment rooted in regenerative medicine. Bloom calls it “an insurance policy for your hair.” Hair follicles from the back are extracted and then sent to a lab to grow and freeze stem cells that can be turned into a serum for future hair restoration.
INVU Salon’s updated version of the mullet is fall’s hottest men’s cut.
CUTS BOTH WAYS
For those that may be looking for a new style following hair restoration, Bryn Mawr’s INVU Salon (invusalon.com), which is readying to move to a new, more expansive location in 2024, is bringing back the mullet—sort of. Their updated interpretation of the legendary “business in the front, party in the back” style is dubbed the “mul+ay.” While the original 70’s mullet was a mix of hair that was short on the sides and top with length in the back, the 2023 version has a much more textured and blended look, says owner Rachel Allen.
“There are many variations of the mul+ay, from shorter, workappropriate looks, like mohawk and shag-inspired mullets, to the curly mullet or curllet. These variations make this classic cut work for any age.”
From the city to the suburbs, Viviane Aires is sought out for her skincare expertise.
SKIN DEEP
An uptick in facials tailored to men’s common skincare woes means that more gentlemen are booking services than ever before. Viviane Aires of Plymouth Meeting’s Viviane Aires Skincare Wellness (vivianeairesskinwellness.com) says that men can benefit from a proper skincare routine just as much as women, particularly when the seasons change.
“As the weather turns from summer to fall, the skin may experience changes as well. The high temperatures and prolonged exposure to sun and outdoor activities during the summer can cause dehydration and hyperpigmentation,” she says, “It’s important to adjust your skincare routine accordingly by incorporating more moisturizing and brightening products to combat the effects of hyperpigmentation.” Beyond environmental impacts, regular shaving can also take its toll.
Her Men’s Facial addresses a variety of these concerns, such as razor burn, ingrown hairs, acne and sensitivity. This 60-75 minute treatment includes a thorough skin analysis followed by a double cleanse, exfoliation, extraction, purifying mask, detox massage, and high-frequency treatment. Aires also takes time to walk through product picks for at-home care, adding that the sheer volume of brands on the market can be overwhelming for men who are just starting a skincare regimen.
