It’s time to celebrate! August marked a very special date for the House of Louis Vuitton: the 200th anniversary of fashion icon Monsieur Louis Vuitton, born in Anchay, France, in 1821. Entrepreneur, innovator and consummate tastemaker, Vuitton created the exquisitely refined aesthetic that continues to define the maison today. In tribute, the fashion house that bears his name will commence a yearlong birthday bash with the commissioning of 200 talented visionaries who will design its famous boutique windows to showcase the upcoming fall/winter season. All of these artistes—which may include painters, skateboarders, writers, curators, dancers, musicians, architects, botanists, poet activists, aviation engineers, tapestry artists, directors, astrologers, stylists, astronauts, glovemakers, Paralympic swimmers, countertenors, drag queens and many more—represent what Vuitton embodied: excellence, superior imagination and expression, and passion. Each will be tasked with a f lat lid box measuring 50 by 50 by 100 centimeters (the very dimensions of the original Louis Vuitton trunk circa 1850) and the instruction to create without limitations. The exciting panoramas of creativity will be seen in Louis Vuitton boutique windows around the globe.

Artist Cambria Guevara, aka Mermaid Hex, teams with legendary French design house Celine by Hedi Slimane for a men’s offering that keeps things perfectly strange. A fourth-generation artist best known for her handscreen prints, Mermaid Hex is a tailored fit for Celine, whose successful collaborations with innovative artists have become a hallmark of the trade. Celine tapped Mermaid Hex for her wearable weirdness with a line of “Strange’’ print featured on both ready-to-wear and accessories, as well as sporting goods such as skateboards, longboards and snowboards.

Tommy Hilfiger opens his archival vault to up-and-coming Brooklyn-based designer Romeo Hunte to create a capsule collection like no other. The two New Yorkers have merged for a reimagination and re-creation of the iconic American designer’s greatest hits. Longtime Hilfiger mentee Hunte brings his trademark style of deconstruction and remixing to the TommyXRomeo capsule, clashing and melding some of the house favorites to produce innovative reconstructive looks that bring forth a whole new language. The unisex collection will be the talk of the town this season, with combinations of color, style and texture that tease the boundaries of convention.
