FROM LEFT: Piaget's "Happy Bird"; Van Cleef & Arpels' "Five Weeks in a Balloon"
Women’s watches have taken a natural turn. Here at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), I've been seeing the most fabulous watches that emulate animal life, sea creatures and even birds in flight. Among the fauna found on watch dials: giraffes, elephants, antelopes, penguins, polar bears and whales. Piaget unveiled its "Happy Bird" line, which features just that. And Van Cleef & Arpels knows how to fly in style, debuting its Poetic Complication watch called "Five Weeks in a Balloon," based on the Jules Verne novel Les Voyages Extraordinaire. The watch has an enamel dial with mother of pearl inlay and retrograde hours indicated by a bird in flight. The balloon’s moving anchor shows the retrograde minutes. What a sight.
Timepiece editor Roberta Naas will be reporting from this season's watch shows in Geneva and beyond.
