New June bakery debuts a sweetheart of a new home in Brewerytown. All of New June’s speciality Valentine’s Day cakes can be customized just for you and your Valentine.
As the icing on the cake after a few years of meteoric popularity, the buzzy New June micro bakery (new-june.com) recently opened its first physical location to much ado—which is quite an evolution from its humble beginnings as a passion project during the pandemic.
Founded by novice baker Noelle Blizzard in 2021, New June began as a creative outlet during Covid. While others were toiling with sourdough, Blizzard taught herself to bake through cookbooks and online tutorials, eventually turning her pastime into an online cake studio and micro-bakery operating from a commercial kitchen. “I think back to 2020,” she recalls, “wearing my baby daughter while baking shortbread for a fundraiser, never imagining I’d eventually open my own bakery.” She quickly gained a national fanbase, admired particularly for her distinctive vintage-inspired and Lambeth-style cakes. By 2024, her talent had earned her the Rising Star Baker title from StarChefs, and her creations were lauded by major publications such as The New York Times T Magazine, Food & Wine, Good Morning America and Architectural Digest.
Balancing aesthetics with taste, Blizzard crafts cakes with high-quality ingredients that bring a touch of nostalgia and seasonal flavors. Her cakes feature unique combinations of sweetened homemade jams and mascarpone-infused whipped cream. June’s menu introduces savory ingredients mingled with crunchy textures, creating a complex, fruit-forward experience that can win over even those who typically aren’t fans of cake—ironically, like Blizzard herself.
And just in time for Valentine’s Day, Philadelphians now just need to head to Brewerytown to get their hands on one of her sweet offerings. Pick up a sugar cookie box, featuring vintage heart-shaped cookies in flavors like earl grey, cardamom, orange blossom and red velvet—or a custom heart-shaped mini cake designed just for you and your sweetheart. The bakery’s Valentine’s flavors combine unique twists on classics, such as olive oil red velvet, flourless devils’ food with raspberry, coconut chiffon and strawberry shortcake, and an Earl Grey honeycomb brownie sundae.
