Hosting the nation’s largest free outdoor concert, Philadelphia swells with locals and visitors alike during the citywide celebration of Independence Day. The festivities, which begin on June 24, culminate with the Wawa Welcome America! Fourth of July Jam at the Eakins Oval on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Hometown hip-hop act The Roots are this year’s headliners, performing sets alongside Grammy winners Earth, Wind & Fire and Michael McDonald, as well as British R&B star Estelle, pop piano player Sara Bareilles and local turntable master DJ Jazzy Jeff. The concert peaks with a tribute to the 40th anniversary of Gamble and Huff’s Philadelphia International Records, a fitting soundtrack as any for the spectacular fireworks that follow.
