The Lessners’ Strut-This line is designed to be equally practical and stylish.
“I’ve always wanted to work with my daughter, so it was a dream realized when she told me about Strut-This,” says Barbra Lessner, recalling the spring day in 2011 when her daughter, Raquel, first mentioned that she had been thinking about creating a line of fitness wear. “Our great relationship, inside and outside of work, translates into our success.”
The Lessners partnered with another mother-daughter team, Cynthia and Aubrey Sieder from Los Angeles, and their nearly three-year-old company, whose motto is “Dress up your workout,” has flourished since day one. Celebrities like Lea Michele, Denise Richards, Kaley Cuoco, and Brooke Burke have been spotted in Strut-This’s cropped yoga pants and hoodies, which harmonize fashion and functionality: The hand-picked prints and color palettes are on-trend, while the fabric blends are fade-resistant and sweat-absorbent.
Although all four Strutters regularly take meetings with the company’s accountants and lawyers, Barbra handles the majority of the money matters and public relations, while Raquel creates the fashion. The dynamic between the two of them is fun but frank. Says Raquel, “Our relationship is definitely interesting, a bit crazy, and always productive.”
While Strut-This fashions are sold throughout the area, the brand’s biggest retail avenue is its new partner Flywheel, the indoor cycling facility with hot spots in Center City and Bryn Mawr. “Strut-This and Flywheel have similar health and lifestyle ideals,” says Raquel. “We’re young companies growing together daily.”
Raquel can’t give away much about what 2014 holds for Strut-This, save to promise new patterns, prints, and fabrics, and an exclusive line catering to moms and daughters alike. “Luckily, we’re in a place to focus on designing new collections and growing our business through wholesale and retail avenues.” For Barbra, the partnership remains very personal: “It’s too good to be true—our girls’ designs and our business.”
