The best part of spring is being able to bust out of the gym and plan your exercise routine outdoors. Here, we caught up with six Philly experts to find out their favorite spots for a sweat session outside.
"When working outside, I like to be where the crowds are! Along the Schuylkill trail during the week and with sprints on the South Street ramp. During the weekend, I get my training fix in at Shawn Reid's class out of SWEAT Fitness in Old City. Shawn's class is outside when weather permits and we do bodyweight exercises combined with a run around the historic neighborhood." —Jamel Harris, Sweat Fitness
"I love working out at my home gym or on my deck! It is so easy to wake up and fit in a great workout in the convenience of my home, especially because most of my workouts do not require a ton of equipment. Nothing better than blasting some tunes and starting the day with a nice sweat!" —Lydia Halbert, MBA, CHC, CPT & Fitness Blogger
"I'm ridiculously loyal to Pilates, barre, and yoga classes at Philly Power Yoga and Thrive, but when the sun is shining and the weather warms up, I skip class and head to the Schuylkill trail for a walk or interval sprints along the river. I love feeling connected to nature while seeing the Philly skyline in the background. Towards the end of the trail, you can catch me chasing after my three-year-old son on the playground." —Hally Bayer, Philly Power Yoga and Thrive
"I'm always just waiting for spring to kick in so I can go trail running with my dog Cooper along the Wissahickon Trail system. Very few East Coast cities have a place that can transport them far away from the city while only being 20 minutes away." —Gavin McKay, Unite Fitness
"As soon as it gets warm, my favorite place to go is Kelly Drive to rollerblade. Yes, rollerblade! It's great cardio, and strengthens the legs and core. Also the Camden Water Front has an amazing fitness loop (created by your truly). There are 10 stations with body weight exercises, sets, and reps. Mix up your fitness—make the world your playground." —Diva Richards, Trainer
"Like many, my favorite place in Philly to workout is the Schuylkill River Trail. There are plenty of hills for sprints, lots of steps and benches for various leg exercises, and tons of trees and posts for attaching my TRX for a full-body suspension training workout. Start and finish with a nice bike ride or run, and your sweat session is complete." —Steve Hoffman, The Sporting Club at The Bellevue
