American Trench’s latest looks for fall include new colors for their trench coat and bomber jackets.
Whether a man’s style skews preppy-cool or laid-back hipster, there’s something downright admirable about the gentleman who puts some thought into his wardrobe. That same attention to detail can be found in the many menswear labels that are springing up across Philadelphia, touting a level of craftsmanship that hasn’t been seen since the heyday of Philly’s manufacturing era, when iconic names like Stetson Hat thrived. Here, three menswear brands making their mark right here at home.
Norman Porter Co. David Stampler started a custom denim line with his brother Michael on the tenets of chivalry and good old-fashioned hard work and named the label after their grandfather. 150 Cecil B. Moore Ave. #201; 267-908-4694
Describe your brand philosophy. “We’re a brand for men and women who appreciate dedication to craftsmanship and can have fun in the process. We value a good day’s work though we try not to take ourselves too seriously.” What makes your jeans special? “In each pair of denim that leaves our Fishtown shop, every detail has been planned and accounted for, from the choice of materials to the hand-hammered rivets,” says David. What’s new for fall? “We’ll be offering some variations in our jacket line and hosting new events in our showroom.”
Waltzing Matilda USA Vice President of Operations Dana Fetch reveals the passion behind the brand’s artisanal leather wares. 21 West Ave., Wayne, 610-688-1500
Who is the Waltzing Matilda customer? “An independent, athletic traveler and Renaissance man who is always looking for the next adventure.” Why is leather a timeless material? “Naturally, it is beautiful and versatile. It lasts a long time and becomes more beautiful with age, and it can be dressed up or worn as workwear.” What’s new for fall? “We’re expanding our jewelry collection and have sourced vegetable tanned leather in new designs. We’re also collaborating with alternative luxury brands on bags, accessories, and décor products for numerous hotels, exclusive clubs, and resorts around the country.”
American Trench For co-founder Jacob Hurwitz, an eye for homegrown quality has manifested itself in timeless trench coats, patterned socks, button downs, and beyond. 7 E. Lancaster Ave., Ste. 220, Ardmore, 215-360-3493
What are some cool-weather essentials? “We have jean collaborations with Shockoe Atelier and a parka collaboration with Cockpit USA.” Why Philadelphia? “Our brand identity is deeply linked to Philly and we are inspired by its uniqueness, from the historic architecture of Society Hill to the old farm houses and grain mills that dot the Brandywine Valley.” Quick tips for sock styling? “Match a color if you can, keep your color tones all in the same family, and mind your knit weights—heavy with heavy, light with light.”
