No longer relegated to the nursery, the rocking chair gets a contemporary reboot thanks to Carla James and Rocker Refined.
A portion of the proceeds from each of Rocker Refined’s unique pieces is given to local and international charitable organizations.
When Mount Airy resident Carla James couldn’t find a stylish rocking chair for her first-born son’s nursery, she did what any enterprising former model and international youth volunteer would do: She made it herself. Less than two years later, her print-happy rockers, wingbacks, and ottomans crafted from both vintage frames and sustainable wood have moved beyond the baby’s room to become the fashionable focal point of living spaces in Philly, New York, Austin, and Los Angeles. For her countless custom orders, she chats with clients over Skype or even invites them to her home-turned-headquarters. This spring James expands her collection to include tufted velvet sofas and kitchen banquettes, but dreams of giving back in big ways through Rocker Refined. “My goal is to be to the furniture world what Tom’s is to shoes,” she says. “To me, success means you take fleets of people along with you.”
